The focus of this light purple tactile print is the word “Lokani” in the center of a circle of out facing hands. Each of the hands has three fingers down on the palm with the thumb and pinky extended. If you are not Hawaiian, you may not know what this means!
Let’s find out! The hand gesture is called the SHAKA, and is actually the official hand gesture of Hawaii.
This gesture has several warm meanings including “hello," “goodbye,” and “all good."
I need to jump in here and say that I am not Hawaiian, but I am honored to create this print with the help of a Hawaiian friend. I know there are many more nuances to this hand gesture!
In the center of the circle of the shaka hands is the word LOKAHI. This word represents unity, harmony, and balance. Underneath the word Lokahi is the word spelled in grade 1 tactile braille.
We would love to thank our Hawaiian friends for their help and insight in designing this print. We look forward to meeting them in March 2026!
